Summer is in full swing in the Bay Area, and there are always things to do. Whether you’re looking to hit the carnival rides at the Santa Clara County Fair, stock up on artistic wares at a festival or relax in the evenings at a summer concert series, find a full slate of festivities for July and August around the Peninsula in this events guide. Events are free unless otherwise noted.
Stanford Jazz Festival: Throughout the festival, 26 artists will hold concerts celebrating jazz and its roots. Performances include a family night and the music of Studio Ghibli with a jazz twist.

Los Altos Arts and Wine Festival: In the 46th edition of the festival, attendees can enjoy arts, wine and various cuisines, as well as all-day live music and entertainment for children.

Clay and Glass Festival, Palo Alto: Attendees can purchase art, homeware and gifts, meet the artists, eat from local food trucks and even sign up for the annual Pottery Throwdown to win swag and a handmade trophy.

Summer Festival, Music@Menlo: This festival features performances of chamber music from seasoned professionals as well as young artists. There are also other events, such as lectures and cafe conversations with expert musicians like oboist James Austin Smith and tenor Nicholas Phan.

Obon Festival and Bazaar, Mountain View: Obon is the Buddhist festival to celebrate and honor the dead. Participants can get ready for the festival by practicing odori dances, purchasing a lantern in a loved one’s memory or preparing your (optional) traditional dress. The festival, hosted by the Mountain View Buddhist Temple, will feature food, games, cultural displays and dance.

Peninsula International Dance Festival: This festival showcases the cultural richness of the Bay Area and Northern California through dance, with performances from Taiko Soba (Japanese), Tradición Peruana (Peruvian), the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone (Ohlone), ARAX Dance (Armenian) and many more.

Summer Puppetry Festival, Menlo Park: The festival continues into July with two events: a mini puppet workshop for kids ages 4-7 on July 22 and a performance of “Jack and the Beanstalk” July 27 from Fratello Marionettes. In August, the festival wraps up with Steve Chaney and Corny Crow Aug. 10 and Bob Baker Marionette Theater Aug. 22.

Santa Clara County Fair: The fair is back, with everything you can expect from a classic fairground. Carnival rides, food and crafts for sale, beer-making and livestock competitions and a parade are all in store for attendees.

Los Altos Rotary Club’s Fine Art in the Park: Visitors can browse and purchase works from more than 150 painters, sculptors, jewelrymakers and glassblowers. The event will also feature henna and balloon-making for kids, plus food from local restaurants like Chef Chu’s and State of Mind.

Bay Area Aloha Festival, San Mateo: This celebration of Hawaiian culture hosted by the Pacific Islanders Cultural Association will feature arts and crafts and food vendors, activities for keiki (kids) and educational workshops.

Burlingame Library End-of-Summer Open House: Visitors can explore the library and enjoy music, refreshments and activities for all ages. With a fantasy theme, participants can play themed games or come in costume to win prizes. There will also be live Celtic music from Chris Waltz and Tina Digesti.

Foster City Summer Days: Foster City’s community celebration will include carnival rides, a rubber ducky scavenger hunt, food, drinks, arts and crafts vendors and booths from community organizations.

Pescadero Arts and Fun Festival: This festival features handmade crafts, live music, a raffle and a kids’ fun area. The South Coast Artists’ Alliance also hosts their annual art show in the I.D.E.S. Grand Hall.

Burlingame on the Avenue: The annual event will feature multiple stages for live entertainment, a play area for kids, and local food and drinks.

Palo Alto Festival of the Arts: Hosted along University Avenue, this festival features 250 booths, live music and live painting on the street. There will also be a kids’ Chalk-a-Lot and – new this year – Ramona Beats & Brews, which is a microbrew and DJ zone on Ramona Street.

Cultura Fest, South San Francisco: This event will celebrate Salvadoran and Latin American culture with food, art, dance, cultural displays and live music. Performers include Tito Mira, Cathia, Crooked Stilo, Bayonics, Grupo Maíz and DJ Discosdelica.

Shakespeare in the Park, Redwood City: The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival brings their performance of “Two Gentlemen of Verona” to Redwood City for three weekends in August. Their adaptation replaces the setting, with Proteus and Valentine traveling not from Verona to Milan but instead from a small Midwestern town to California.
